2007 Rail ‘n Trail and Road Route Ramble Tour

For 2007 the tour is two events in one: Rail N Trail for the casual rider and the Road Route Ramble for serious road cyclists.

Rail N Trail:

Sunday, August 12th marks the Lake Erie Wheelers’ 4th Annual Rail-n-Trail Tour. Board the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad at Rockside Station at 10:00am, where attendants will load your bike onto the baggage cars. Once on board, riders will view the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park from the comfort of the passenger cars as the train transports you and your bicycle to Akron North Station. Upon arrival, snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The ride begins at North Station and proceeds down a marked bike lane to Mustill Store, the newest restored building and museum along the trail. From there, riders begin their journey on the Cuyahoga Valley Tow Path back to Rockside Station. After 15 miles on the towpath trail, stop at the historic Stanford House for a homemade spaghetti lunch.

The Rockside Station is located on 7900 Old Rockside Road, about 1/2 mile west of Canal Road. Riders must arrive between 8:30 and 9:30am to pick up their train pass, meal ticket, and load their bicycles. Please be early! The train departs at 10:00am. The price of admission, which covers the ride, snacks and lunch, is $35 for adults, and $30 for children aged 10 years and under.

The 2007 LEW Club Picnic

The LEW Club Picnic will be held on Saturday, August 4th at Jim Boland’s residence in North Olmstead. At this time, there is no ride scheduled in association with this event.

The April, 2007 Club Meeting
At President Dave Schneider’s direction, the meeting came to order, and commenced with the reading of the minutes by the Secretary. After these were accepted, the Treasurer’s report was given, which indicated a balance sufficient for the club’s anticipated expenses. The Membership Chairman stated that the club had 84 paid members.

Old business began with the announcement that Rail-n-Trail would be held on August 12th. Marketing for the event was gearing up, with the two portions being billed as separate yet simultaneous events, each appealing to different groups: the Rail-n-Trail train & bike ride on the Towpath, and the Road Route Ramble as a challenging open-road ride for regular bicyclists. The brochures promoting each portion will be ready early in May. Old business continued with a reminder of the weekday rides available for members. Eric Overton spoke up to express his disappointment that nobody showed up to brave the bitter weather to ride April 7th’s L.D.P.P.R.

New business opened with an account of the recent dedication of the Hilliard Road Bike Lanes in Westlake, from the Rocky River municipal boundary to the High School. It was mentioned that Rocky River had considered, and then tabled extending the lanes into their city; they may move ahead with it if enough encouragement (and pressure) is brought to bear. Dave Schneider announced that this was the last meeting until October, then adjourned the meeting on behalf of Sherman McKee, proprietor of Bike Authority, who gave a fascinating presentation of the latest in bicycle technologies and accessories.

If the scheduled ride for any given date is an invitational, or starts outside the tri-county area (Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina), a pick-up ride will start from Olmsted Falls East River Park at the normal start time for the month.

Weekday Rides Returning This Month

The Tuesday Night Rides will start on April 3rd at 6:30 at the Fairview Park Post Office, weather permitting (start at 6:00 in Fall). Greg James will lead the rides this year, with some assistance from other individuals. As Class C rides, 10 to 18 miles in length, these are recommended for beginning and slower riders, plus new club members. Also a good way to make our acquaintance (invite someone you know). For more information, contact Greg James at 440-331-9419 (clockwerke@aol.com).

The Wednesday Night “Mod” Ride (moderate pace) leaves from the Olmsted Falls Public Library lower parking lot at 6:30 Wednesday nights, starting April 4th. Our routes are for those who prefer quiet country roads. By necessity, we may find ourselves on busy roads, but we try to limit those times to short stretches. Most days we get back before dark, but it's a good idea to have lights and reflectors, especially early and late in the season. The pace and speed of our rides varies depending on who shows up; we usually ride at a Class B pace. We can ride about 20 to 40 miles, but at the beginning and the end of the season it's usually shorter than that. For more information please call (or email) your fearless leaders Marc Snitzer at 440-236-3017 (msnit@juno.com), or Greg James at 440-331-9419 (clockwerke@aol.com).

In addition, there will be the Regular Wednesday Night Rides out of the Berea Library parking lot for the swifter riders. Contact Jim Boland for details (see above).

This early in the riding season, even with the early start of Daylight Savings Time, we strongly recommend using lights and reflectors on your bicycle, to reduce the risk of accidents: it helps to be seen, and to see the road.

The March, 2007 Club Meeting

The meeting started with the reading of the minutes by the Secretary. This was followed by the Treasurer’s report, which indicated a comfortable balance sufficient for operating expenses and upcoming projects. The Membership Chairman reported 77 paid members as of the meeting date.

Old business started with a report on the Long Distance Pre-Season Rides by Eric Overton: participants covered 86 miles on the first ride, and 107 on the second (in spite of unfavorable weather). These rides will continue through April. Next came a report on the Regular Club Wednesday Rides: ridership was down during the recent snowstorms, but was expected to resume with the usual enthusiasm shown by the participants. The starting point will remain at the Berea Library for the foreseeable future (see above).

New business started with an announcement regarding the April meeting (see below), after which Mark Kasmark and Greg James displayed the new Lake Erie Wheelers Sport Shirts to the members. Order forms for these shirts were provided, as were copies of the club ride schedule for 2007. There was a brief discussion on how to handle chronic freeloaders on the club rides, and then the meeting adjourned. John Sutori, the “Rogue Mechanic“ (he does not have a shop, but works out of his home), then gave an excellent presentation on bicycle maintenance, covering a number of topics from accessories selection to gauging wear and tear on drive train components.

The 2007 Women’s Rides Series

In order to provide as many opportunities as possible to ride amongst bicyclists with common interests, we are pleased to announce the Lake Erie Wheelers Women’s Rides, which will be held on the third Saturday of each month, from April through October. This year, Peggy Sands will lead these rides, at a C or B pace, from various starting points. For details, please contact Peggy at 440-320-5871 (p-sands@sbcglobal.net).

Weekday Rides:

Regular Club Wednesday Evenings – Moderately paced, 17-22 mile rides starting at 6:30pm from the parking lot of the Berea Library (in the Berea Commons area off of East Bridge Street and South Rocky River Road), weather permitting. For details, contact Jim Boland at 440-686-0108 (jboland@apk.net).

Weekend Club Rides
The club ride schedule for 2007 has been determined from March through October. In the interest of looking out for the well-being of club members and guests, each ride will have a Ride Leader (who volunteers for that particular month), plus a defined pace. It will be the Ride Leader’s responsibility to keep the main group at that pace, and ensure that no riders are left behind. All riders must wear an approved helmet. If the scheduled ride for any given date is an invitational, or starts outside the tri-county area (Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina), a pick-up ride will start from the Olmsted Falls Library at the normal start time for the month.

Weekday Rides Returning in April
The Tuesday Night Rides will start on April 17 at 6:30pm at the Fairview Park Post Office, weather permitting (start at 6:00pm in Fall). Greg James will lead the rides this year, with some assistance from other individuals. As Class C rides, 10 to 18 miles in length, these are recommended for beginning and slower riders, plus new members. They are also a good way to make our acquaintance (invite someone you know). For more information, contact Greg James at 440-331-9419 (clockwerke@aol.com).

The Wednesday Night “Mod” Ride (moderate pace) leaves from the Olmsted Falls Public Library lower parking lot at 6:30pm Wednesday nights, starting April 18. Our routes are for those who prefer quiet country roads. By necessity, we may find ourselves on busy roads,

but we try to limit those times to short stretches. Most days we get back before dark, but it's a good idea to have lights and reflectors, especially early and late in the season. The pace and speed of our rides varies depending on who shows up; we usually ride at a Class B pace. In the beginning and end of the season we usually start out small, less than 20 miles, but can expand to nearly 40 as the season progresses. For more information please call (or email) your fearless leaders Marc Snitzer at 440-236-3017 (msnit@juno.com), or Greg James at 440-331-9419 (clockwerke@aol.com).

The 2007 Ohio Bike Path Series
This year we are proud to continue the popular Ohio Bike Path Series, conducted entirely on bicycle paths or all-purpose trails, supplementing the regular Sunday rides. These will usually be held the second Sunday of each month, from May to October, with an additional Bike Path Ride on the fourth Sunday of June through September, as we introduce a few new trails for some variety.
Last year we drew many members, their families, and some guests. We hope to attract new riders unused to riding in groups, folks uncomfortable riding on roads and competing with motor vehicles, and seasoned riders out for the pure joy of riding with friends. These will be “C” level rides, beginning at 10:00am, with a stop for lunch. All riders must wear a helmet and be club members, unless a signed signature card is obtained in advance. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The March, 2007 Club Meeting
Will be held on March 13, 2007, the second Tuesday of the month, at the Westlake Porter Library, located at Center Ridge Road and Dover Center Road, with entrances on both roads.
